Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) is a 12-bed, state-of-the-art unit that provides specialized cardiac care for infants, children and young adults with congenital heart defects or acquired heart disease. It is equipped with the latest technology, advanced patient monitoring capabilities, and is staffed by a highly specialized multidisciplinary team that includes:

  • Expert physicians with advanced fellowship training in pediatric cardiac and/or intensive care, providing in-house coverage 24/7
  • Advance practice providers
  • Specialized pediatric cardiac intensive care nurses
  • Pediatric pharmacist
  • Pediatric nutritionist
  • Pediatric respiratory therapists
  • Occupational, physical, and speech therapists
  • A dedicated social worker and case management specialist
 

The PCICU team works closely with pediatric cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, and pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists as “one care team” to ensure that the highest level of expertise is always available for every patient. The multidisciplinary team performs bedside rounds daily, encouraging participation from parents and family members, who are invited to ask questions and contribute to decision-making.

The PCICU team provides expert care for approximately 400 patients per year, achieving excellent outcomes. There is strong commitment to safety and quality, with weekly reviews of patient safety and quality data. Additionally, our PCICU is an active participant of the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC4) – a worldwide network of pediatric cardiac intensive care units that enables the comparison of care between units and fosters collaboration for quality improvement.

Expert care provided by the multidisciplinary PCICU team:


  • Neonatal diagnosis and preoperative care
  • Postoperative surgical care for congenital heart surgery of all complexity levels/li>
  • Mechanical circulatory support, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or temporary ventricular assist devices (VADs)
  • Management of heart failure and cardiomyopathy
  • Management of complex arrhythmias
  • Care following complex cardiac catheter interventions
  • Intensive care management for patients with cardiac disease undergoing non-cardiac surgeries
